Expertise

Professor Barone-Adesi is currently studying the design and the management of synthetic risk-free assets, which aim to improve the performance of pension and insurance funds. Some of his recent research has examined the key aspects of financial market predictability, with a specific focus on predictive modeling. His findings show that combining machine learning and model selection techniques dramatically increases forecasting capabilities. Such findings pose a significant challenge to the efficient market hypothesis, as they indicate that machine learning experts can build algorithms capable of consistently outperforming the market. His results also call for new asset pricing models that include nonlinearities.

USI and EMBA back to campus

USI and EMBA back to campus

USI and EMBA back to campus

We are glad to welcome EMBA10 students back to campus, from 17th September.

Students are required to wear masks in common indoor areas, including classrooms, while faculty may remove them when lecturing only if they can maintain an adequate distance from front rows. Sanification and ventilation of the classrooms will be performed every two academic hours.

All courses will continue to make extensive use of the iCorsi platform so that the syllabus and materials will be available to all. In addition, should significant limitations regarding travel and related quarantines be imposed, USI is committed to supporting those temporarily unable to reach the campuses by providing a recording of the lectures. We invite members of the academic community from foreign countries to consult regularly the website of the Federal Office of Public Health with special attention to the page listing the rules about entering Switzerland. For courses held by external lecturers, part of the course might take place online. Faculties will define the specific methods and inform students through their course schedule. The ability to discuss thesis and PhD dissertations in videoconferencing remains in place. For lecturers coming from States or regions considered at a high risk of infection or having health concerns, it will also be possible to give online lectures. The methods are developed in agreement with the Pro-Rectorate for Education and Students’ Experience.

Should federal and cantonal provision change to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus, USI may progressively return to online learning.

Also, in defining the arrangements for the autumn semester of the academic year 2021-22, USI has been inspired by the four principles that have guided the Institution in the two academic years affected by the pandemic: to protect the safety of the academic community; to seek solutions to guarantee continuity, while contributing towards a stable social environment; to ensure the training even in such a volatile and challenging context; to comply with the decisions of the competent public authorities. Throughout this period, USI has considered in-person learning and university life on campus to be very important. Still, at the same time, it has shown the ability to manage online training, taking advantage of the opportunities and ensuring a flexible and continuous learning experience.

USI in the world’s top ten small and young universities

USI in the world’s top ten small and young universities

USI in the world’s top ten small and young universities

Two months after the publication of the world ranking of the best ‘young’ universities (under fifty years old), Times Higher Education (THE) publishes the ranking of the best ‘small’ universities (with less than five thousand students), in which USI now ranks 14th (up 6 positions). A cross-analysis of the two rankings also shows that USI is eighth in the world among young and small universities.

These results reflect some of the characteristics that have always distinguished Università della Svizzera italiana and that meet students’ expectations: small classes and a faculty-student ratio (currently 1:9) that fosters interaction, a small campus and an idea geographical location, between the two large urban areas of Zurich and Milan.

The THE ranking of small universities is based on the main THE World University Rankings 2021, in which USI figures in the 251-300 range (out of 1527 universities reviewed). Universities that teach at least four disciplines and have fewer than 5,000 students are also considered. The average number of students at a university in the 2021 Rankings of the world’s best small universities is 3,197 (USI currently has 3,350) – by comparison, the average number of students at an institution in THE’s global ranking is 25,000.

USI EMBA gives you the right tools to take your career to the next level.

In today’s world, entrepreneurs and executives must face two new factors that affect political and economic environments, alter social relations and deeply impact businesses, their operations and their processes:
Digital Revolution: The advent of big data, machine learning, and new technologies require new organizational approaches and competencies.
Sustainability: The need to create and maintain a sustainable society for future generations must be an integral part of a successful business strategy.

Digital transformation is about adapting businesses to a “new normal”. As digital technology, society and businesses co-evolve into this “new normal”, creating multiple levels of change and uncertainty, business leaders must think thoroughly about their business models and the new drivers of value creation and value capturing.

LET’S HEAR FROM THE EXPERT

Professor Gianvito Lanzolla

Gianvito Lanzolla is Professor of Strategy at Cass Business School, City University London, which he joined in April 2006. He currently serves as the Head of the Faculty of Management and he is the Founder and Director of the Cass’s Digital Leadership Research Centre (DLRC). Before joining Cass Business School, Professor Lanzolla served on the faculty of the London Business School. Over the years, Professor Lanzolla has had several visiting appointments at leading business schools including Hyderabad’s Indian School of Business, Berlin’s ESMT and University of Bologna.

SO WHAT?

Each function, in every organizations, must understand their implications and apply the appropriate transformations to obtain a competitive advantage in their markets.
In today’s environment simply closing the managerial skills gap is not enough anymore. In order to prosper in this new reality an innovative and visionary approach is required. It is essential to question the validity of existing models with a pioneering, and not merely adaptive, spirit and develop new paradigms. EMBA10 embraces this spirit of innovation and is constantly evolving to ensure the highest education standard to the participants.
